Jing Fang Clinical Internship Nanjing

June 8th-19th 2026

Limited to 35 participants

Registration closes 30th April

Following the great success of our first clinical internship in China, we are delighted to be offering this opportunity again!

The initial internship brought together a long-established learning community shaped by years of shared study and clinical practice. It included students at a wide range of stages in their learning journey, some studying with Tino since he first began teaching, alongside others who joined the path at different points up to a just a few years ago.

Coming together in China for advanced clinical training marked a meaningful point of connection and deepening for a community that has continued to grow steadily over time.

For this upcoming internship, we’ve made several thoughtful refinements to the 2024 schedule, adapting it to better support students and to make the experience even more immersive, enjoyable, and clinically impactful.

We’re especially excited to welcome not only returning students, but also many new practitioners who have joined us in recent years, as interest in Jing Fang continues to grow and deepen worldwide 🌱

Jing Fang

Take the Next Step in Your Jing Fang Training

This advanced Jing Fang Clinical Internship takes place in Nanjing under the guidance of Prof. Huang Huang and senior Jing Fang physicians Dr Xiao Ling Tang and Dr Zhang Xue Guan. The programme offers a rare opportunity to observe Jing Fang medicine across multiple outpatient and hospital settings within the Chinese medical system, providing a comprehensive view of how classical formula-based medicine is applied in different clinical contexts.

Participants will observe clinical practice in the following settings :

Guo yi tang Clinic

南京南中医大国医堂门诊部

Guo Yi Tang is a high-volume outpatient teaching clinic affiliated with Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, where Jing Fang medicine is practised within an academic medical environment. The clinic serves a large and varied patient population and functions as a key site for clinical education and transmission of classical formula-based practice. Participants will observe detailed case analysis, formula selection, and modification in real-time clinical encounters.

Jing Fang

Provincial Hospital

A leading tertiary-level Chinese medicine hospital integrating clinical care, research, and teaching, with one of the highest outpatient volumes in China. Professor Huang Huang leads a dedicated outpatient department where students observe high-volume Jing Fang practice in a structured setting, as well as inpatient Jing Fang care integrating classical herbal prescribing with acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion, and external therapies, offering insight into inpatient treatment, longer-term care, and multidisciplinary clinical collaboration.

Dr. Huang’s Clinic

传统门诊部

A more personalised outpatient setting, allowing participants to experience a different clinical rhythm and decision-making process, and to observe how Jing Fang medicine is applied in private practice.

Together, these three settings provide a rich and immersive clinical experience, illustrating the adaptability, depth, and contemporary relevance of Jing Fang medicine across institutional, hospital, and private practice environments.

  • June in Nanjing is typically hot and humid, with daytime temperatures commonly ranging between 25–35°C. Participants are advised to bring light, breathable clothing and comfortable footwear suitable for long clinical days.

N.B. A white clinical coat is required for use in the clinic and must be brought by each student.

A light jacket or layer is recommended for air-conditioned indoor spaces, and rain protection may be useful, as occasional showers are common.

  • Mobile & Connectivity

Students can purchase a SIM card upon arrival at the airport. Please ensure your phone is unlocked and compatible with international SIM cards.

    Communication in China

During the internship, communication will take place primarily via WeChat. Students are advised to download and set up WeChat before arrival.

Recommended Apps to Download in Advance :

    • WeChat – essential for communication

    • Alipay – widely used for digital payments

    • DiDi – China’s ride-hailing service (similar to Uber)

    Maps & Navigation

    • Apple Maps – works reliably in China

    • Baidu Maps or Amap (Gaode Maps) – recommended for more detailed local navigation

    Translation Apps (No VPN Required)

    • Pleco – highly recommended; works fully offline once downloaded and is excellent for Chinese–English translation, including medical terminology

    • Microsoft Translator – offers offline language packs and functions reliably without a VPN

Note: Google Translate can be used offline if language packs are downloaded in advance, but online features will require a VPN.

    VPN (Optional but Recommended)

A VPN is recommended if you wish to access international websites and services.

    Free VPN options (limited reliability):

    • Proton VPN (free tier) – no data limits, slower speeds

    • Windscribe (free tier) – limited monthly data

    Paid VPN options (more reliable):

    • ExpressVPN – widely regarded as one of the most reliable options in China

    • NordVPN – good performance when properly configured

Students are strongly advised to install and test VPNs before travelling, as access and downloads may be restricted once in China.

Preparing these tools in advance will help ensure a smooth and well-supported experience during your time in China.

Reflections from Our Students

  • I completed an internship with Dr. Huang Huang in Nanjing at the beginning of my second year of jing Fang with Tino, at a time when my understanding of herbal formulas was still developing. Because of that, I initially expected that I might not be able to fully benefit from the experience.

The clinic operates at a fast pace, with many patients being seen and treated in a short amount of time. In the beginning, this felt quite overwhelming, and I questioned whether the level might be too advanced for where I was in my training.

However, as I continued observing, something started to shift. I began to notice that formulas were not prescribed randomly — they followed clear and consistent patterns. Certain formulas appeared repeatedly, and gradually I started to recognize the logic behind them. Also in my own practise i do a lot of gynaecology, while his patients come mostly for different problems, like cancer. But still there is a huge overlap in the same formulas, because he looks at constitution and complaints. This helped me move from trying to memorize formulas toward actually understanding them.

At the end of each day, there was space for reflection, where Dr. Huang Huang would explain his reasoning in more detail and answer questions. In addition, the teaching sessions provided a valuable opportunity to deepen understanding and connect clinical observations to theory.

Once I adapted to the pace, the internship became incredibly valuable. It gave me a much deeper and more intuitive understanding of herbal formulas, especially in terms of pattern recognition and the use of formula families.

Looking back, what initially felt overwhelming turned out to be exactly what I needed to grow. I would highly recommend this internship to students who want to develop real clinical insight and learn to see the structure behind formulas in a practical, experience-based way. Its unique to be able to see dr. Huang Huang work in his clinic and get lessons from him and the other Jing Fang specialists, even if u are still a beginner Jing Fanger.

  • You can complete thousands of hours of theoretical Chinese medicine learning through courses, workshops, and online videos that will increase your knowledge greatly. But it doesn’t necessarily make you a good practitioner. Western teaching of Chinese medicine has become highly conceptual, theoretical, and frankly, confusing. Jing Fang is rooted in practical application, and good practice expressed through simple treatments and effective clinical results. This can only be truly learned through face-to-face practice and real-life observation. The Nanjing trip is a rare once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for those who wish to go beyond conceptualising, reading, and thinking about Chinese medicine to another level, by spending time with doctors who have seen more than 100 patients a day for many decades.  If you wish to advance beyond being a lifelong professional student, and advancing your practical professional skills and clinical results, this trip is one of the rare opportunities that we have to achieve that.

My internship at Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine in the summer of 2024 was one of the most meaningful experiences of my professional life. It felt like a rare, perhaps once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Chinese medicine in its true clinical setting.

Having travelled to China every year, for over 20 years to study in clinics and hospitals, I am very familiar with the limitations of many study trips, busy environments, limited teaching, and largely observational learning. Nanjing was completely different. In a few weeks, I felt I learned more than I had in the last 10 years of previous visits.

This was due to the openness and generosity of Professor Huang Huang, Dr. Salustino Wong, and his team, with clinicians who practise Jing Fang at a very high level every day. They genuinely value international students and are deeply committed to teaching. The presence of an excellent translator, who is also a Jing Fang practitioner, made the learning clear, engaging, and highly practical.

If you are serious about becoming a better practitioner, and not just another lifelong theoretical student of Chinese medicine, I would wholeheartedly recommend this Nanjing internship. It is truly something special, you will remember for the rest of your life.
