About Jing Fang Classics Institute
Jing Fang Classics is an international institute dedicated to the teaching, research, and clinical application of the Han Dynasty school of medicine. Our mission is to preserve and transmit the Jing Fang teachings of Professor Huang Huang 黄煌 while promoting the highest standards of Classical Chinese Medicine worldwide.
Through the guidance of Professor Huang Huang, we teach the Classical medical tradition from a practical, evidence-informed, and clinically focused perspective, emphasising accurate pattern differentiation, objective diagnosis, and effective clinical results.
In recent years, interest in Chinese Herbal Medicine has grown significantly. However, many educational programmes around the world provide limited clinical training in the practical application of the Classical formulas. Jing Fang Classics was established to bridge this gap by providing comprehensive education in the theory, diagnosis, and clinical application of Jing Fang medicine, enabling practitioners to confidently integrate the Classics into modern clinical practice.
Professor Salustino Z. Wong 黄仁 first began teaching Professor Huang Huang's Jing Fang Prescription Method in Italy in 2006. Over the following years, courses expanded to Spain, Portugal, Peru, and several other countries, laying the foundation for an international Jing Fang community.
In 2017, Professor Salustino Z. Wong, together with Ana Celso and Raquel Filipe, established Jing Fang Classics PT/ES, bringing Classical Formula Medicine to Spanish/Portuguese-speaking practitioners. This initiative revived his Jing Fang teaching in Portugal, making authentic classical training accessible throughout Latin America, Spain, and Portugal.
In 2021, Salustino Z. Wong and Tara Barden established Jing Fang Classics ENG (formerly Jing Fang Ireland). Originally created to serve students within Ireland, the programme quickly attracted practitioners from around the world and became the English-speaking branch of the institute, providing structured education to students across Europe, North America, Asia, and Oceania.
Today, the Jing Fang Classics Institute has established branches serving English, Spanish/Portuguese, French, Italian, Estonian, and Russian-speaking communities, creating an international network dedicated to preserving and advancing the clinical tradition of Jing Fang medicine.
Students from more than 30 countries, including Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, Estonia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, the United States, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, India, Portugal, Spain, Peru, and many others, have studied with Jing Fang Classics, forming a growing global community committed to the study and clinical application of Classical Chinese Medicine.
Professor Huang Huang 黄煌 is the director of the International Jing Fang Institute at Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine and is internationally recognised as one of the world's foremost authorities on Jing Fang. His work has played a pivotal role in the revival and modern clinical application of the Classical formulas recorded in the Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage) and Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet).
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Chinese Medicine, Professor Huang Huang was awarded the prestigious title of Nationally Famous Chinese Medicine Doctor (全国名中医), one of the highest professional honours bestowed upon physicians in China.
An internationally respected clinician, educator, and scholar, Professor Huang Huang has authored and edited numerous influential texts that have shaped contemporary Jing Fang practice. His major works include The Ten Classes of Formula of Traditional Chinese Medicine (《中医十大类方》), Zhang Zhong-jing's Clinical Application of 50 Medicinals (《张仲景50味药证》), The Guidance of Case Histories (《医案助读》), The One Hundred Classical Formulas (《经方100首》), and Applications of Medicinals with Classical Formulas (《药证与经方》).
Professor Huang Huang's teaching is distinguished by its clear, systematic, and clinically practical approach. His methodology centres on the concept of Lèi Fāng (類方), or families of formulas, together with the principles of Yào Zhèng (藥證), the correspondence between medicinal substances and clinical presentations, and Tǐ Zhì (體質), constitutional medicine. These frameworks provide practitioners with a structured method for understanding the Classical formulas and applying them safely and effectively in contemporary clinical practice.
Today, Professor Huang Huang continues to inspire practitioners and educators worldwide, helping to preserve the wisdom of the Han Dynasty while demonstrating its enduring relevance in modern medicine.
